Italy and the United States have signed last Tuesday September the 29th a five-year agreement to cooperate in the field of nuclear energy.
This agreement focuses on the development of 12 new-generation nuclear power plants in Italy and the two powers will work together in the fields of research and development, treatment and storage of nuclear waste, security and efficiency.
Italy abandoned nuclear power in 1987 after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and as all the other leading western powers use and produce nuclear power the Italian parliament has decided to reconsider this option and maybe cover 25% of its energy needs for the future.
This agreement will involve the exchange of information, personnel and materials between Italy and the US.
